Bartali’s Bicycle

Bartali’s Bicycle: The True Story of Gino Bartali, Italy’s Secret Hero, by Megan Hoyt, illustrated by Iacopo Bruno, Quill Tree Books 2021

I couldn’t wait to read this book after seeing the cover and reading that it’s a nonfiction PB Bio of a wold-class cyclist who “secretly worked with the Italian resistance to save hundreds of Jewish men, women, and children, and others, from certain death, using the one thing no authority would question: his bicycle.”

The book did not disappoint. It’s a well written story about one man who saw injustices happening during WWII, and decided to use his greatest talent to help. Bartali cycled around Italy delivering fake identity papers to Jewish families in hiding. And when that didn’t feel like enough, he went further, helping people escape and hiding one family in his home. His courage and compassion in the face of great evil is a wonderful and timely example for today’s children and their parents. The illustrations by Iacopo Bruno are beautiful and done in a vintage style that evokes the art sometimes seen on posters from that time period.

I would recommend this book for all elementary aged children, especially those who are studying WWII or love to learn about sports figures.

*Note: I was given a free PDF copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
