– First Book in the Camila Chapter Book Series
Back Jacket Description for Camila the Baking Star: Camila and her papá enter a baking competition on TV. As they start their challenge, Camila insists on doing everything herself. But without teamwork, their desert is a mess! Is it too late for Camila and her papá to become baking stars?
Camila The Baking Star is a short Chapter Book (length: three chapters and 26 pages) in a four-book series. These books hit a sweet spot for emerging readers who are transitioning from Easy Readers to longer Chapter Books. My 8 year old second-grader was able to read the text independently with a little help. What I loved the most about these books was that they supported my daughter in learning to read (and understand) new Spanish words, too, something we have been working on at home. Each book has simple Spanish words sprinkled throughout that can be understood in context.
This book depicts a Latinx family with close family relationships. I loved that Camila’s papá was the one to enter the baking competition with her. It was fun to read and engaged both of my children (ages 4 and 8). In fact, they liked it so much that after we read these two books, they begged me to buy them the other two books in the series!
At the end of the story there is an activity (Baking Hojarascos) that looks fun. We haven’t tried it yet but the girls are excited to! There’s also a glossary of Spanish words at the beginning of the book, and a glossary of some of the more difficult English words in the story at the back. It includes some reading comprehension questions for discussion. As such, these books would make a great homeschooling companion, or just serve as a great way to support your child’s in-school learning at home.
*I was gifted a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review in connection with Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2021.
