Eunice and Kate

Eunice and Kate, written by Mariana Llanos, Illustrated by Elena Napoli, Penny Candy Books 2020

This is such a sweet story about friendship, pursuing your dreams, and respecting the dreams of others. Eunice and Kate are neighbors and best friends. I get the impression that their moms are both single mothers, working hard to make ends meet and provide for their daughters. I really loved the heartfelt portrayal of these two working class families and the ways they are rich in love and friendship.

Both girls are dreamers. Eunice wants to be a ballerina, and Kate wants to be an astronaut. But trouble surfaces when they draw portraits of each other in art class. As the publisher’s description says, suddenly “things get mixed up. Eunice draws Kate as a ballet dancer and Kate draws Eunice as an astronaut, and they both get more than a little annoyed.”

But with a little help from their moms, the girls recognize the loving intent behind their friend’s portrait of them. Each girl finds a way to bridge the gap between their differences and support the other’s dreams.

The illustrations in this book are as beautiful and sweet as the story. I love the color pallet and the dreamy cartoon-like style of the characters and scenes.
