You are Your Strong pairs debut author Danielle Dufayet’s beautifully lyrical and affirming writing with experienced illustrator Jennifer Zivoin’s lush and emotionally resonant illustrations.

Written in the first person, the first half of this story addresses several common situations that might make kids feel worried, scared, sad, or mad. It illustrates how a loving adult can gently help a child find his or her Strong. For example, when one child is sad that he can’t find his Lovey, Grandma touchingly rubs his back “and listens until the sun shines again. Her love becomes my Strong and Sad fades away.”

Almost midway through, the story shifts into the second person for one spread to address the reader and shift the focus to helping them understand how “to find your Strong all by yourself.”

Back in first person, it offers practical and helpful examples of strategies children can use to manage their own emotions when an adult isn’t available to help. For example, when a girl’s brother takes her toy and “Mad charges in,” she yells into her pillow. (When I read this book to my three-year-old, she interjected, “that’s a good idea!”)

At the end, the book addresses the child reader with powerful affirmations, concluding: “You are your Strong.”

I love that this book also includes a note to parents, written by psychologist Julia Martin Burch, Phd, with practical tips on how to meet the sometimes exhausting and difficult task of teaching our children to manage their big emotions.

  2. I love this book! I’ve been recommending it to all of my teacher and school social worker friends. It’s so simple, which is its strength. (See what I did there?)
